The experience
It isn't a church inside a cave.
It's a mine that became a cathedral.
Zipaquirá has been drawing salt from this mountain for centuries. Where the miners opened galleries, they left vast hollows in the rock — and it was inside those hollows, 180 meters below the surface, that an entire cathedral was carved: naves, dome, narthex and the Stations of the Cross, each one hewn from salt.
The visit descends through a tunnel that grows cooler and quieter as you go. The lighting plays across the translucent rock: the same wall turns blue, then amber, then violet. At the far end, a mirror of water reflects the cross — the spot where almost every visitor falls silent.
The Basic Passport covers the full route, with an audio guide, the projection mapping on the rock, the 3D short film and the train that brings you back to the surface. The Brine Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Monumental Museum 180 are also included.

You can, but it's tight: the cathedral is a half-day trip outside Bogotá and the museum is in the historic center. The concierge usually plans them on consecutive days — and the Gold Museum is closed on Mondays.
